Southeast Asia – November/December 2017
After a couple of years of not taking a big, multi-week trip to another continent, we headed for Southeast Asia in November, 2017. Much of this itinerary focused on Thailand, with a side jaunt over to Cambodia for five nights. While Thailand was incredible, Cambodia turned out to be the real highlight of the experience. This trip was full of golden temples, the fascinating ruins of a civilization that Americans are taught far too little about, and incredible food – including everything from street vendors to Michelin starred restaurants ranked among the world’s best.
Unlike most of our trips, this one I did not plan alone. As with some previous trips to India and Africa, we enlisted the help of a local travel agent to hook us up with guides, some of our ground transportation, and itinerary planning. Douglas, from Purple Dragon in Bangkok, proved to be an expert in providing us with guides in Bangkok, Siem Reap, and Chiang Mai, as well as hotel bookings in Siem Reap and Chiang Mai, and a few flights on Bangkok Airways. We also relied on airline miles to book awards on Delta, Thai Airways, and China Airlines to get us between home and Bangkok, as well as to Phuket and back from there to Bangkok.
Hotel accomodations on this trip included the Le Méridien Bangkok, Jaya House River Park (which is quite possibly our favorite hotel in the world now), the Rachamankha in Chiang Mai, and The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection resort in Phuket. We also had a few nights in transit in airport hotels, at the Grand Hyatt Incheon and the Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.
