El Calafate & Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
El Calafate was our jumping off point while in Patagonia. From there we ventured to Torres del Paine across the border in Chile, as well as to Estancia Cristina and Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. The region is filled with one stunning vista after another, as the snow-capped Andes along the border with Chile give way to the wide open plains of Argentian Patagonia. Numerous large glaciers flow into Lago Argentino from the South Patagonia Icefield, the world's second largest contiguous icefield. Several of these, including Perito Moreno, are quite accessible. While in El Calafate, we also visited Estancia Cristina, a historic sheep farm, and enjoyed one of the best meals of the trip at Mi Rancho in El Calafate.
