Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay
Approximately 30 miles across the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires lies Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Colonia, founded by the Portugese in 1680, is one of the oldest towns in South America. The town's historic quarter is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is popular with tourists visiting Buenos Aires. We took the high speed Buequebus ferry across the bay to visit this scenic town on our second day in Buenos Aires, where we explored the historic quarter's stone streets, shops, and antique cars.
