Machupicchu Pueblo
Machupicchu Pueblo, formally known as Aguas Calientes, is an odd place. There are no roads to this village deep in the jungle – the only way in is to either hike, or take the train. If it weren't for Machu Picchu, perched high in the mountains above the town, there would likely be no town here at all. The somewhat haphazard assortment of hotels, restaurants, and shops here exist solely to service travelers coming to Machu Picchu, most of whom are either there for a day trip, or just one night. Still, the town is in a beautiful setting, roughly T-shaped, with one main street straddling the railroad tracks, parallel to the Urubamba River, and the other leg of the T running up a valley with the Rio Aguas Calientes flowing through the middle. We spent a night here, and explored the town on foot, even venturing into the non-tourist section where locals who work in the various businesses live.
