Davis Mountains & Fort Davis
The Davis Mountains are one of the state’s largest mountain ranges, rising to well over 7,000 feet above the desert floor below. This high elevation creates pockets of evergreen forests, cooler and wetter climates, and supports wildlife like cougars and black bear, along with proghorn antelope and deer. The mountains are also home to the McDonald Observatory, where you can view the planets and galaxies during their nighttime star parties alongside professional astronomers. One of the state’s best state parks is also here, along with the Fort Davis National Historical Site.
