Our trip to West Texas included overnight stops in three locations - Terlingua (three nights), Marathon (two nights), and Marfa (two nights). in Terlingua, we booked a small vacation casita through Airbnb. Casa Nuevo, our casita in the Nuevo Terlingua development, was a lovely small house with a very comfortable king size bed located in a spacious main room, accompanied by a sunken sitting room, large bathroom with rainfall shower, and outdoor areas that included a private outdoor shower and soaking tub, and sitting area around a fire pit. In Marathon, we stayed at the historic Gage Hotel, one of the top boutique hotels in Texas. The Gage is almost like a small resort, designed with plenty of areas to sit and relax, read, swim, and enjoy conversation. The property also includes several retail establishments, its signature restaurant 12 Gage, a very nice coffee shop, a fully equipped fitness center, a microbrewery and barbecue restaurant that was excellent, and a gorgeous set of gardens. Finally, our last stop in Marfa was at the Hotel Saint George. This modern hotel was built mostly from the ground up (a portion of the first floor is a historic building), on the site of a long demolished historic hotel that shared the same name. The Saint George borrows much of its DNA from typical modern hotel design, with some European influences. It's a perfectly nice and comfortable property, but lacks much of the unique charm and character of other accomodation choices in the region. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but much of the hotel felt like it could have been anywhere in the world.
