Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, a small city in northern Thailand, was our third stop on the trip, after Siem Reap. We spent three nights here. After arrival from Siem Reap, our guide met us for a tour of the night markets and dinner of a local noodle soup in one of the markets. The next day, we spent the day with our guide touring temples, both in the old city and on the mountains that are just north of the city. We were also introduced to khao soi at lunch that day, a spicy noodle curry that was addicting. On our third, and final day, we were scheduled to go to an elephant rescue park, but decided to cancel those plans, and instead spend the day exploring the old city on our own. That turned out to be a good decision for us, as by this point in the trip we needed some downtime. Chiang Mai is a great destination for a low-key Thai city experience. While Bangkok is all hustle all the time, Chiang Mai feels relaxed. It's a great place to just wander the old city and night markets, enjoy the street food, and take it all in at a leisurely pace.
