Mumbai
Mumbai was our first stop in India. Arriving in the middle of the night, after traveling nearly 24 hours from DC, we had our one and only mishap of the trip – no driver to meet us at the airport. It turned out that the driver thought he was supposed to meet us around 3:00 PM, not 3:00 AM. That led a ride in a traditional Indian taxicab, which involved a ridiculously small car with no trunk, luggage strapped to the roof with a piece of rope (thankfully it was not raining), and my knees pressed into the windshield. But, we made it to our hotel safely and quickly (Mumbai’s infamous traffic is nonexistent at that hour), and the rest of the trip went off without any issue. In Mumbai, we were met by one of the best tour guides we have ever had anywhere, Mala, who took us to not only the places on our itinerary, but to others as well. She also helped us get custom suits made, and made sure we knew exactly where to have lunch and dinner. Mumbai was our introduction to India, and a great way to start our two week exploration of the country.
