Jim Thompson House
Jim Thompson, an American businessman and designer (and possibly, spy), built this house, now a museum, in 1959. Situated on a half acre lot adjoining one of Bangkok's canals, the property is a bit of a jungle oasis in the city. Thompson made his fortune in the Thai silk industry, and his company remains as a leading producer of Thai silk goods, with many stores located in Thailand. Thompson was born in Delaware in 1906, and was sent to Thailand by the US government in 1946. His silk company was founded in 1948. On March 26, 1967, Thompson disappeared while out for a walk during a visit with friends in Malaysia. Despite an intense search, no trace of Thompson was found.
